Maintaining Your Scooter: What You Should Be Doing Monthly

Your mobility scooter is a lifeline, it keeps you independent, active, and mobile. But just like a car, it needs regular care to stay reliable and safe. A quick monthly maintenance routine can prevent costly repairs, extend the life of your scooter, and keep you moving with confidence.

Here’s what you should be checking every month to keep your scooter in top condition.

Check the Battery

Your battery is the heart of your scooter, and ignoring it is the fastest way to get stranded.

What to do:

  • Charge the battery regularly, even if you’re not using the scooter daily.

  • Never let it run completely flat.

  • Make sure the charger is working properly.

  • Look for signs of wear on cables or connectors.

Pro tip: If you notice reduced range or slower charging, your battery might be on its way out. Don’t wait until it dies, get it checked.

Inspect the Tyres

Your tyres take the brunt of daily wear. Whether they’re solid or air-filled, they need a monthly look.

What to do:

  • Look for cracks, bald patches, or uneven wear.

  • If you have air-filled tyres, check air pressure and inflate if needed.

  • Make sure all tyres are securely fitted and aligned.

Unsafe tyres = reduced grip = more risk. Don’t ignore them.

Test the Brakes

Good brakes aren’t optional. You need full stopping power, especially on slopes or busy pavements.

What to do:

  • Squeeze the brake levers or test the braking system to make sure it’s responsive.

  • If it feels loose, stiff, or delayed, get it serviced.

  • Listen for squeaking or grinding sounds.

Give It a Clean

It’s not just about looking good — dirt can damage moving parts, clog wheels, and corrode metal.

What to do:

  • Wipe down the frame, seat, and controls with a damp cloth.

  • Avoid soaking electrical components.

  • Clean out any debris around the wheels.

Bonus: You’ll spot small issues (like cracks or rust) before they become big problems.

Check Moving Parts

Anything that folds, swivels, or clicks should be checked monthly.

What to do:

  • Inspect the tiller, seat swivel, armrests, and basket fittings.

  • Tighten any loose bolts or screws.

  • Apply silicone lubricant to joints if they’re stiff or squeaky.

Test Lights and Horn

These aren’t just accessories, they’re essential for visibility and safety.

What to do:

  • Turn on lights to make sure they’re working.

  • Press the horn, if it’s weak or silent, check the wiring or battery.

  • Replace any broken bulbs straight away.

Keep an Eye on Error Codes or Warning Lights

Modern scooters often show warnings if something's wrong.

What to do:

  • Familiarise yourself with your scooter’s user manual.

  • If a warning light is flashing or you're getting error beeps, don’t ignore it.
